For a 70th birthday tribute to the distinguished Swiss conductor Paul Sacher, Mstislav Rostropovich hit on the idea of inviting twelve of Sacher's friends to collaborate in writing a set a variations based on his name. This piece is Benjamin Britten's contibution to the work.

Excellent presentation of a litte jewel
This is the theme of a set of theme and variations commissioned by Rostropovich for his conductor friend named Sacha. The theme was composed by Britten with the variations done by other composers. The theme was written near the end of Britten's life and has the same inventiveness that is in his 3 cello suites. The name Sacha is sort-of spelt out in the music but it seems pretty obscure to me. The piece is short but demanding covering almost the entire range of the cello. Some of the leaps to high thumb positions appear quite daunting and a section of the piece breaks into two staves. However the piece is under two minutes long and would make an excellent encore and companion piece to the first movement of the first cello suite by Britten. Musically, the suite is still the superior piece by far. The printed music is clearly presented and has a nice bit of accompanying text explaining the origin of the theme and variations.
