Composed by Christos Hatzis. This edition: perfect bound, softcover. Perfect. Score. Promethean Editions #PE106. Published by Promethean Editions (PO.PE106).
ISBN 9781877564062. 305 x 220mm inches.
Influenced by Greek dance music, Christos Hatzis" concerto for oboe and orchestra Telluric Dances showcases virtuosic oboe writing through a blend of exotic and exciting orchestrations based on mediterranean and Eastern European dance forms. This publication reveals Hatzis" bold and often surprising approach to orchestral writing, which includes technically demanding oboe cadenza passages, improvised percussion and "unconventional" orchestral devices, including some simple and affective staging directions for the soloist. Each of the three movements centres on a style of dance. Snake Dance is based on the chiftetelli, a common dance form originating from the Eastern Mediterranean; Eagle Dance, is a passacaglia based on a 9-beat rhythmic pattern known in Greece as a zeibekiko an improvised dance characterised by sudden and unexpected movements; and Dancing in the Light, founded on a common Balkan folk dance.Throughout the work, Hatzis references tonal modes characteristic of Turkish and Arabic music, which he first encountered in the Greek night-clubs of Toronto, while working as a young composer in local bands. As such, this work reveals aspects in the genesis of Hatzis eclectic style of music. This is the first orchestral publication by one of Canada's most important composers.
