Arranged by Gary Penkala. Text: Hymn tune - Tucker. Straightforward, dialogic setting of a lively tune, with text from Lauds. Christmas. Octavo. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.5100).
The hymn tune Tucker, a sprightly 6/8 melody, forms the basis for this a cappella SSATBB anthem. Voice parts are not difficult and the range for each voice is comfortable. The text is George Stewart's paraphrase of Quem vidistis pastores? dicite, the first antiphon for Lauds of Christmas. The anthem employs the Renaissance convention of English (vernacular) verses with a Latin refrain. The English verses are structured as a charming dialogue with the shepherds who have just returned from the manger, while the energetic Latin refrain provides the musical focal point of the piece. The overall effect is decidedly British.
