By Billy Joel. By Billy Joel. Arranged by Alan Scott. This edition: pdf. A Cappella, Barbershop, Contemporary A Cappella, Pop. 10 pages. Alan Scott #1456582. Published by Alan Scott (A0.1898202).
Originally arranged for Coachella Acappella Women's Chorus based in Palm Springs, California, this arrangement would work for either men's or women's a cappella chorus by changing the octave indicator on the clef. Because it is arranged in Barbershop voicing (Tenor, Lead, Baritone, Bass), the part-writing is close and the internal voices will intertwine, requiring attention to balance for the chorus that is not accustomed to the melody being primarily in the Lead (second from top) part. It may also give some of your singers a chance to practice reading a clef that is not usually theirs.
It's highly syncopated - just like the original song - and that provides the rockin' drive that would have come from Billy Joel's piano. But that may also present some challenge for singers. The arrangement alternates between almost a be-bop accompaniment/solo feel to homophonic refrains providing a good deal of variety for the singer and audience. With its repeated low E flats, the bass part might be a stretch for most high school singers.
