Frantisek Cerny (1861-1940), first double bassist of the National Theatre and experienced professor of the Prague Conservatory, created a number of virtuoso compositions and practice pieces for his instrument. The technical studies for the thumb position were printed for the first time in 1927 and have become a primary teaching aid for the study of double bass.
