The suite, Op. 71a is a selection of eight orchestral pieces from the full ballet, designed for concert performance rather than staged ballet. Tchaikovsky premiered the suite in March 1892, several months before the full ballet's stage debut. The Nutcracker Suite is one of the most recognizable works of the Romantic period and is often performed independently of the ballet, especially around the Christmas season.
