When Tantalus, a figure from Greek mythology, invited the gods to a banquet, he served them his son Pelops, whom he had cut into pieces. He did so to test whether his guests were omniscient. As a punishment, Zeus sent Tantalus to Tartarus, the deepest part of the underworld, to suffer everlasting torture. The term ‘torment of Tantalus' refers to this predicament, representing things much desired but that are out of reach. Kevin Houben used the story of Tantalus as inspiration for this composition.

Het woord tantaluskwelling verwijst naar de hachelijke situatie van Tantalus: het wordt gebruikt om iets aan te duiden waarnaar men verlangt, maar wat men niet kan krijgen. Kevin Houben heeft het verhaal rondom Tantalus als inspiratiebrongebruikt, met als resultaat een boeiende compositie.

Als Tantalus, eine Figur aus der griechischen Mythologie, die Götter zu einem Bankett lud, servierte er ihnen Zeus' Sohn Pelops, der er in Stücke hatte schneiden lassen. Auf diese Weise wollte er herausfinden, ob seine Gäste tatsächlich allwissend waren. Der Begriff "Tantalusqualen" geht auf die Bestrafung des Tantalus zurück; das geflügelte Wort steht für sehr begehrte, aber unerreichbare Dinge. Kevin Houben ließ sich von der Geschichte des Tantalus zu dieser Komposition inspirieren.

L'expression "le supplice de Tantale" révèle l'impossibilité d'assouvir un désir ou un besoin alors que la chose convoitée semble tellement accessible ! Kevin Houben s'inspira de l'histoire tragique de Tantale pour composer cette pièce pour instrument solo et piano.
