Through his contact with violinist Steffen Gaitzsch and violist Holger Naumann, the composer embarked on a veritable journey of discovery into the sonic possibilities of string instruments. This led to the creation of numerous pieces for small ensembles, some of which are successfully performed by a wide range of artists.
One such piece is the "Tango for Two," published in 1999 by Friedrich Hofmeister Music Publishers and also available on YouTube, including a recording of a public concert encore with Gidon Kremer and Ula Ulijona.
The version for string quartet was written in response to requests. A spirited and contrasting performance at a steady tempo is desired. The major-key section is certainly exuberant, but not intended as a parody.
