Published by ElgiraMusic (A0.1654144).David Short is an American trumpeter and composer, born on March 19, 1951, in Cincinnati. After studying at Indiana University and Columbia University, he won a competition for the position of principal trumpet in the RAI Symphony Orchestra in Rome, where he served from 1973 to 1994. He later joined the RAI-TV light music orchestra until 2012. He has performed as a soloist on major stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1985, he gave the European premiere of Luciano Berio's "Sequenza X" and was the dedicatee of a composition by Franco Donatoni.
David Short founded his own brass ensemble, The David Short Brass Ensemble, and composed numerous original pieces and arrangements for brass quintet. Among his works are "Brass Quintet," "Ein Symphonischer Spass," "Testaccio Suite," "Tango," "Amadeus Quodlibet," "I Remember Igor," and "J.S.B." Some of these works have been recorded by ensembles such as the Billi Brass Quintet and the Gomalan Brass Quintet.
Short’s piece "Tango" for brass quintet reflects the influence of Argentinian tango, adapted for brass instruments. The composition has been performed in various concerts, including one on July 22, 2017, at the Festival della Piana del Cavaliere in Italy.
The modifications I made to this Tango consisted of changing the instrumental formula, with alto sax instead of horn and adding drum accompaniment, plus changing the character of the ending.
