Taming the Tasman – Dale Vail (2019)
Instrumentation: Violin, Cello, and Piano Trio
Commissioned by: Tasman Trio, with support from Creative New Zealand
Taming the Tasman is a vividly expressive and challenging work that narrates the emotional and physical journey of migration across the Tasman Sea. Inspired by the composer’s own experiences and underpinned by jazz influences, the piece uses the migration of birds between New Zealand and Australia as a poignant allegory for leaving one’s homeland to start anew.
This autobiographical trio comprises three evocative movements:
Movement 1: Into the West — Captures the peril and intensity of crossing the Tasman, embodying the raw uncertainty and resolve needed to face a new life.
Movement 2: Alone in a Crowd — Explores the nuanced loneliness and alienation of feeling slightly out of place, balanced by moments of character and strength.
Movement 3: Broken Wing — Begins with a reflective mood on the struggles and setbacks of migration, culminating in a powerful surge of determination and resilience.
Perfect for advanced chamber ensembles, Taming the Tasman offers a richly textured and emotionally charged journey through hope, despair, and renewal.
