A little tongue-in-cheek music from Jari Villanueva for Woodwind Quintet. What if Bach wrote Take Me Out To The Ballgame?
Bach, Baseball and Balks
It turns out Johann Sebastian Bach was a huge baseball fan. Not only that, he was a player all his life. Bach’s love of baseball was as great as his love of music. Even to the point where they intertwined.
J.S. Bach used deceptive cadences in his music. A deceptive cadence is where a chord progression in music sounds like it will go to a certain tonal center (like a tonic) but instead goes to another chord. It stretches out the music a bit and deceives the listener’s ear.
Bach, who was the pitcher on his hometown team (the Leipzig Locrians), was known for his somewhat deceptive motions on the mound in which he tried to fool runners on the bases. Because he was called on this many times, umpires started referring to the illegal move as a Bach. The term was Anglicized into today’s term Balk.
On the Locrians was an infield composed of players from the local opera orchestra. A flutist, oboist, clarinetist, horn player, and bassoonist played first base, second base, shortstop, third base, and catcher, respectively. During a game against the Dresden Dorians, the group asked Bach to write a composition for them. This is the result.
