Szeged’s Dóm Square is a monumental and historically inspired concert band composition evoking the architectural grandeur and spiritual atmosphere of one of Hungary’s most iconic urban spaces. The work reflects not merely the physical presence of the square, but its layered history, ceremonial traditions, and enduring cultural resonance.

From the outset, the piece is shaped by bold and noble brass fanfares, establishing a sense of dignity and solemnity. The brass writing functions almost architecturally, constructing sonic pillars that mirror the cathedral’s imposing façade. These fanfare gestures recur throughout the work as structural anchors, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the composition.

In contrast to the weight of the brass, a piccolo solo emerges, representing the sound of traditional “síposok” (pipe players). Its agile, high-register lines cut through the texture with clarity and brightness, evoking historical street musicians and folk ceremonial elements within the monumental setting. This timbral contrast between grounded brass sonorities and the piercing, elevated piccolo creates a compelling dialogue between solemnity and living tradition.

In a later, climactic section of the work, the fanfare material reappears in an intensified form, now shaped by the alternating 9/8 and 7/8 meters. The asymmetrical pulse generates mounting tension and dramatic propulsion, transforming the ceremonial gestures into something more urgent and monumental.

The fanfares expand across the ensemble with greater force, and the shifting meter adds a sense of spatial breadth — as though the sound were echoing across the vast openness of the square.
