By Hadrian Virtual Ensemble. Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Adrian Erik Horvath. This edition: pdf, streaming. Classical, Romantic Period. 99 pages. Adrian Erik Horvath #761205. Published by Adrian Erik Horvath (A0.1160893).The second movement (Largo) of Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” by Antonín Dvořák stands among the most beloved slow movements in the symphonic repertoire. In this wind band arrangement, the timeless beauty and noble simplicity of the original are preserved while fully embracing the distinctive tonal character of the modern symphonic wind ensemble.
Set in D-flat major, the movement opens with a deeply contemplative introduction, establishing an atmosphere of solemn stillness. The world-famous principal theme is entrusted to the English horn, whose warm, dark, and gently veiled tone gives the melody its unmistakable emotional depth. The solo line is shaped with broad phrasing and expressive flexibility, supported by transparent scoring that allows the harmonic richness to resonate without obscuring the melodic voice.
Throughout the arrangement, particular care is given to balance, blend, and dynamic architecture. The woodwinds provide a soft, organ-like foundation in the opening and closing sections, while the brass contribute dignified, chorale-like sonorities in the climactic passages.
The percussion writing is deliberately restrained: only timpani are used, reinforcing structural pillars and dynamic peaks with subtle weight and resonance. This limited percussion palette preserves the reflective, spiritual character of the movement while maintaining clarity and focus within the ensemble texture.
The central section expands dynamically and texturally, reaching moments of emotional intensity before gradually returning to the serenity of the opening. The final pages demand exceptional control of tone, breath, and ensemble cohesion, ensuring a quiet yet profoundly moving conclusion led by the English horn’s introspective voice.
This wind band version offers concert ensembles the opportunity to present one of the great masterpieces of Romantic symphonic literature in a form that remains faithful to Dvořák’s vision while being idiomatic, balanced, and deeply expressive for symphonic wind band.
