Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 9 represents the culmination of the composer's short, but prolific life. Known as "The Great" C major symphony, it was not premiered until eleven years after the composer's death, and even then, only in abridged form due to the advanced challenges it presented to players at the time. It was discovered by Robert Schumann among Schubert's possessions, and presented to Mendelssohn who directed the first performance.This arrangement for string orchestra begins with the Allegro ma non troppo that follows the stately Andante introduction in the original. One of the most fascinating moments is at the introduction of the second theme, which appears in E minor instead of G major as might be expected.
