Since the previous six symphonies, Beethoven waited for another four years before starting to work on his seventh symphony. He finished it in a sudden burst of inspiration in the spring of 1812 - the fateful year of Napoleon's invasion of Russia and subsequent disartrous retreat from Moscow.
The 7th symphony was first performed on 8 December 1813, at a benefit concert for the soldiers wounded at the Battle of Hanau. It was Beethoven's so-called 'Battle Symphony'
The Allegretto (II) is in a minor, whilst the symphony is in A major. It has an insistent and hypnotic rhythm.
This orchestration is for Violin and Cello as a duet and only captures the main idea of the Allegretto. I want to make this great music more accessible to more players.
