The Sixth Symphony in D major "Călușarii", op. 45 (2011, revised in 2026), in two composite movements, is a neo-classical composition inspired by the ritual healing dances of men's groups ("călușari") in the Romanian tradition. All the themes are based on actual melodies from the ritual, which was traditionally meant to cure mainly psychological ailments inflicted by mischievous fairies. On a more general level, it represents the triumph of solar qualities (resolution, self-discipline, brotherhood, even humor) over languid, softer, and more melancholic states. Formally, it is a rather unique hybrid reuniting the spirit of Romanian folklore with some classical forms re-interpreted, so it is well suited for orchestras and listeners willing to study both these worlds. The first, complex movement is a composite experiment, alternating the main sections of Classical forms (slow introduction, sonata form and slow movement in tripartite form with variations). The exuberant Finale is composite as well, combining the main sections of a scherzo with two trios and of sonata-rondo form. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. Total duration: 27 mins.
