Tchaikovsky composed his Fifth Symphony in 1888, in his forty-eigth year. It was a very busy time for him, as by this stage in his career he had become internationally famous. During the winter months of 1888 he undertook an exhausting concert tour abroad, with engagements in Prague, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg, Paris and London, in the course of which he met Brahms, Dvořák and Gounod. Back home, he settled into a new house north-west of Moscow, and it was here during the summer months of 1888 tht he worked on the new symphony.
Tchaikovsky conducted the first performance of the work in St Petersuburg on 5 November 1888. The public acclaimed the symphony, although some critics, including César Cui, one of 'The Five', condemned the last movement as a failure. Before the year was out, Tchaikovsky was back in Prague, conducting more performances of his new symphony and a production of his opera Eugene Onegin.
The Andante Cantabile is a beautiful, expressive melody played on a solo horn. In this arrangement, the violin takes that solo.
