Symphony No. 5 in A flat major "Pastoral", op. 36 (2009, revised 2026) is a neoclassical composition inspired by the ancient Romanian myth about the shepherd who has lost and found again his flock. The symphony combines powerful, clear forms and developments with a harmonic system based on the traditional scales of the themes, in a general striving from mystery, melancholy or darkness to light and exuberant joy. The first movement depicts the mystery and majestic indifference of nature as opposed to the protagonist's loneliness and quest, and the second movement is a brief scherzo reflecting the shepherd's illusory joy of finding his flock. The third movement is imbued with melancholy and despondency, yet it is suddenly liked directly to the newly found light and exuberant joy of the last movement. Total duration 34 min.
