Mozart wrote this symphony especially for a visit to the Bohemian capital of Prague, which he undertook in January 1787, where his latest opera, The Marriage of Figaro, was playing to packed houses. Mozart and his wife Constanze were the guests of his Viennese patron and fellow Mason, Count Franz Joseph, who had a palace in Prague. The visit turned out to be a great success.
This symphony, one of Mozart's mature masterpieces - is unusual in that it has only three movements instead of the usual four of a symphony. But it more than compensates for this by the strength and power of its muscial ideas, reinfored by the inclusion of two trumpets in the orchestral lineup. In this performance the opening 'exposition' section of each movement is repeated. Mozart dirceted the first performance of hsi new 'Prague' Symphony to enhusiastic applause.
The Andante (2nd movement) unfolds as a long, majestic melody in several clearly defined parts. The central part of this movement becomes darker in mood and becomes a more urgent statement. The calmer mood finally returns, with a last very quiet statementof that same fragment of melody.
