Composed by Ludwig (Dp) Van Beethoven. Arranged by Peet du Toit. This edition: pdf. Classical. 6 pages. Peet du Toit #1455188. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1896739).
The title of Beethoven's third symphony (Eroica) means heroic. He wrote it in 1803. Orginally the dedicated it to Napoleon Bonaparte. In fact, originally the symphony was called 'Bonaparte'. This was in honour of Napoleon Bonaparte, French general who defended the new French Repubic after the Revolution.
At first, Beethoven greatly admired Napoleon for his heroism and bravery. But he become disillusioned when Napoleon, ambitious for his own glory decided to crown himself emperor in 1804. Horrified and angry, Beethoven tore the title page of his symphony in two.
When he received a copy of the score of the symphony from the publisher, he scrathced out the original title so hard that he went through the paper. In the end he called it the 'Heroic' symphony and dediated it to 'the memory of a great man.' But in spite of this, Beethoven did retain some admiration for Napoleon. Even in 1824, long after Napoleon's defeat, he remembered him as great and noble figure.
Here is short version of the funeral march within the Eroica symphony for a String Quartet. Musically, the thematic solemnity of the second movement has lent itself for use as a funeral march, proper.
