Symphony No. 2: Cheeky Chap is a light-hearted four-movement orchestral work dedicated to the composer’s loyal companion, Sam, an eleven-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever. Composed between April and July 2019, the symphony celebrates Sam’s playful personality, boundless energy, and mischievous charm.
Each movement captures a different aspect of Sam’s character, from exuberant vitality to humorous mischief and joyful motion. Lively rhythms, clear melodic ideas, and colourful orchestration bring the dog’s antics vividly to life, creating a work that is both entertaining and immediately engaging for performers and audiences alike.
Although written in symphonic form, Cheeky Chap is intentionally concise and approachable. With a total duration of approximately 10 minutes, the symphony is ideal for inclusion in concerts featuring contemporary orchestral music, light orchestral repertoire, or programmes designed to engage younger audiences and community ensembles. The orchestration is practical and accessible, making the work suitable for youth orchestras, community orchestras, university ensembles, and professional players.
