Symphony No. 1 is a four-movement orchestral work inspired by themes of remembrance, resilience, and human tragedy. The symphony is dedicated to the memory of Captain Edward John Smith, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and to all those who lost their lives in the sinking of the RMS Titanic (1912).

The composer, originating from Stoke-on-Trent, draws a personal connection to the historical legacy of the city and its association with Captain Smith. This connection forms the emotional foundation of the symphony, which reflects both the grandeur and the fragility of human endeavour.

Composed between 2018 and March 2019, the symphony was later expanded with the addition of a short third movement in April 2020, deepening the reflective and memorial character of the work. The four movements explore contrasting emotional states, from energy and conflict to stillness and remembrance, culminating in a final tribute to those lost.

While conceived as a complete symphonic structure, the work maintains clear thematic writing and practical orchestration, making it suitable for a range of orchestral ensembles. Symphony No. 1 is appropriate for concert programmes featuring contemporary orchestral music, British composers, historical themes, or memorial and commemorative works.
