Did you see that? What was it? Students will have no problem imagining mysterious shadows with this lively yet mysterious-sounding solo. Written in D minor, the left hand is an excellent study of harmonic fifths and sixths. The right hand has root position triads, clusters and broken thirds. In A-B-A form, the two hands alternate with an ostinato rhythm in the A sections. The eight-measure B section is sequential, both rhythmically and melodically. The last four measures are faster and bring the piece to an exciting close.

Swift Shadows
I would definitely recommend this piece, especially for boys who love fast, pounding music! With the repeating patterns, it's not hard to learn, but sounds showy when played loud and fast. One of my less-than-great students won a spot on the Honors Concert at a festival playing this piece!
