The song has emerged as a favourite of Cohen's songbook, drawing countless artists to record it.
The inspiration for Cohen was his friendship with dancer and artist Suzanne Verdal in Montreal. The lyrics refer to the Saint Lawrence River and to Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel near the harbour. It is considered a style of folk music, with a lyrical and poetic structure that blends seamlessly with a storytelling vibe. This creates a distinctly melancholic ballad.
