Sunset At Sea is inspired by the sea on the West coast of Ireland off the Wild Atlantic Way. It is an ever moving seascape, at times wild and at other times calm and serene. Yet, it is constantly moving, wave after wave, the same but different. The Sea Symphony takes this wave structure in the melodies and rhythms as well as the structure of each movement. The slow movement, Sunset At Sea, captures the hidden movement of the ocean under a serene surface. The sun appears static, motionless, yet slowly it descends, yellow turns to pink to red, then indigo. The opening theme in the wind is passed between the instruments, then in counterpoint, leading to the big melody starting tentatively on the horn. After the climax of the big theme for full orchestra, the flutes and oboes play with the melody contrapuntally before an extended coda brings the movement to a close.
