Program Note by the composer Kohei KONDO
This commission (composition request) for a piece based on a scenario written by Etsuko Hirai is as impressive and entertaining as the masterpiece "Peter and the Wolf." It captures the talent, dignity, and depth of Ito Jakuchu, Matumura Goshun, Kimura Kenkadō, and Yoshino Goun, as well as the feelings after the great fire, and conveys the atmosphere of the Nose Kaido road from Osaka to Ikeda and Minoh. The request was to achieve this wit clarinet and violin duo. The script, with its vivid transitions of location and character and emotional impact, was faithfully reproduced, and the 11 pieces were completed surprisingly smoothly. The composition was structured, like an opera, by creating leitmotifs for each character and object.
No. 1: Overture: Camel March with Yoshino Goun and Introductory Music A march of camels brought by Yoshino Goun. At the end, the melody of "Kishi no Yanagi" (Willows on the Shore) appears, forming an entrance music. It is said that camels were brought to Japan at that time. Jakuchu painted a picture of a camel.
No. 2: Dutchman Crossing the Yodo River This piece depicts the journey of Ton, a wandering Dutchman and son of the chief of the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki, crossing the Yodo River on a ferry. It also includes natural depictions of the river's reeds and waves.
No. 3: Jakuchu and Shinjaku Yoshino Goun visits Jakuchu and Shinjaku at Saifukuji Temple. This piece features a conversation between Jakuchu and Shinjaku.
No. 4: Camel March Leaving Saifukuji Temple Yoshino Goun, Jakuchu, and Shinjaku depart Saifukuji Temple in a lively procession on camels.
No. 5: Kimura Kenkado at Hattori Tenjin Shrine This piece depicts Kimura Kenkadō visiting Hattori Tenjin Shrine. Kenkadō's theme song. 17
No. 6: The Bustle of Okamachi Yoshino Goun delivers a speech, depicting the bustling scene in Okamachi. Jakuchū, Goun, and their camel entourage, along with Kenkadō and the Dutchman Ton and his entourage, join together.
No. 7: Conversation between Jakuchu and Kenkado Jakuchū and Kenkadō walk a short distance away from Goun, the Dutchman Ton, and the camel entourage, chatting. The two share a nostalgic conversation, with Kenkadō encouraging Jakuchū.
No. 8: Goshun in Ikeda Music for the scene where Goshun is visited in Ikeda. Goshun's theme song. While Goshun feels lonely aft er leaving Kyoto, he also enjoys Ikeda's delicious food, builds good relationships with the townspeople, and enjoys events like saibara (traditional Japanese musical recitals), feeling like he's living in a capital city.
No. 9: Hayakago Music. Short Ride in a fast palanquin This piece is a tale of a palanquin traveling through the cold, early winter roads of late autumn and early winter deep in the mountains of Ikeda. It's like the "Troika" from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije" set in Edo-period Japan. Its depiction of the seasons is reminiscent of Vivaldi.
No. 10: Rokudayu the Boar Hunter The theme of Rokudayu the Boar Hunter. The melody, reminiscent of a Nose folk song, conveys Rokudayu's personality.
No. 11: At Minoh Falls Minoh Falls in late autumn. The piece begins with Jakuchu and Shinjaku chatting in front of the waterfall, followed by the arrival of Goshun. The beauty of Minoh Falls soothes the artists' loneliness after leaving the capital and restores their desire to paint.
