Each movement references either a pre-existing traditional melody or an essentially Ukrainian element.
For me, the complexity of composing a work for solo clarinet lies in creating the illusion of polyphony and harmony through a purely monophonic instrument. To overcome this compositional challenge, frequent register changes, arpeggios, and fast figurations have been used.
From an interpretative standpoint, this is a highly demanding and complex work. Due to its length, performing individual movements is an option, although the composition was designed to be played continuously, with its five movements performed in succession and with only the minimum necessary pauses between them.
It is important to clarify that, since this music is inspired by folk motifs, a classical clarinet sound is not necessarily expected; in many instances, a more open and direct tone may be chosen.
The suite for solo clarinet was thoroughly reviewed and studied in the Final Degree Project of the Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Conservatorio Superior de Castilla-La Mancha by the clarinetist and conductor Luis Enrique Hidalgo. Further information about the context of the work, as well as the revision process, can be found in his project. Personally, I am deeply grateful to Luis Enrique for the time invested in this composition, in its study, revision, and premiere, and I hope this suite proves to be an equally exciting and inspiring challenge for you.
