Composed by Claude Debussy. Edited by Regina Back. This edition: urtext edition. Stapled. Barenreiter Urtext. With fingering. Performance score. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA08769. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA08769).ISBN 9790006532810. 12.2 x 9.57 inches. Fingerings by F. Palme.
Claude Debussy’s Suite bergamasque was first published in 1905 by the French publisher Fromont , but the suite’s origins go back to the early 1890s when it was first under contract with the publisher Choudens . By the time of the suite’s publication nearly 15 years had transpired and the originally three-movement suite had evolved into one with four-movements with different titles and the work was issued by a publisher to whom Debussy had difficult relations.
The extant 1st proofs to the first edition, corrected by Debussy, clearly show his excision of dozens of bars as well as revealing numerous textural alterations. In 1909 at the earliest, Fromont re-engraved the suite and added many accidentals - in particular in the Passepied - thus altering the harmony. This later engraving has been the basis for all modern editions although no justification for the re-engraving or the resulting modifications can be traced back to Debussy.
Regina Back’s Urtext edition clearly lays out the development of the suite, documents the various reprints and the changes to them, and she offers unique insights into the title of the suite and the individual movements.
Bärenreiter’s new edition is based on the first edition corrected by Debussy - with its original harmony - and offers the later alterations as small print in the volume.

Clair de Lune
I have always had an affinity for Debussy and this Suite Bergamasque is no exception. And of course the world famous Clair de Lune is one of the movements in the piece. If you are looking for a turn of the last century modern piano music this is perfect for you.

Remarkable Edition
It is difficult to ascertain with certainty the final desires of Debussy due to mishandling of the original edition by the first publisher. The work was later republished, but it was done in haste with some errors creeping into that edition. Thus, the work of putting out a reliable urtext requires a great deal of research. This edition documents that research unlike what I have seen in most editions. It also includes useful fingering, making this edition a cut above the others. There are also useful performing notes in the front matter, notes that enable the performer to understand Debussys intentions and style. Finally, the pages in this edition lie flat and stay open to each page. The print is clear and easy to read as well. Sometimes expensive editions are not worth the added cost, but this one is well worth the additional $5 over the Peters or Schirmer.

Great works in a fantastic edition
The works are very interesting and pleasant to play (I obviously love Clair de lune, but the Prelude and the Menuet are fantastic too). There is a great introduction in six pages, with a genesis, the publication history, aesthetics and performance practise... The book is in big dimentions (9,5 x 12.6 inches) and, as you can see in the scan, the printing is very clear and big. The fingerings are often helpful. And it is one of the rares score I have bought, which stays really in place !
