Composed by Gregory Youtz. Arranged by Erik Steighner. Classical. Score. Composed 2012. Alea Publishing #ALEA1093. Published by Alea Publishing (A7.ALEA1093).
ABOUT THE WORK: Gregory Youtz's Studies were originally composed for bass clarinet in 2007. Five years later, Alea Publishing is pleased to make this outstanding volume available for saxophonists, through the composer's collaboration with editor Erik Steighner. EDITOR'S NOTE: My intent in creating a saxophone version of Gregory Youtz's Studies was to let these wonderful works speak for themselves. I also wanted to make them accessible to saxophonists in different stages of development. The wide-ranging lines of the clarinet version were preserved in many cases, offering saxophonists some enticing altissimo register challenges. However, all altissimo lines may be considered optional and the etudes are performable with no extended range demands whatsoever. ABOUT THE EDITOR: Dr. Erik Steighner has performed with ensembles including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony, the Northwest Sinfonietta, the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, the Tipping Point Saxophone Quartet, and the Alloy Saxophone Quartet. He has also appeared as saxophone soloist with groups including the Lyric Brass Quintet, the Camas Wind Quintet, the Indiana University Symphonic Band, the Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta, the University of Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra and the UPS Wind Ensemble. Steighner has taught at Texas State University and The University of Texas at Austin and is currently saxophone lecturer at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Steighner has composed and arranged for the saxophone and has premiered works by Deborah J. Anderson, Joseph R. Bozich, John Corigliano, Robert Honstein, Kyle Kindred, John Mills, Nick Sibicky, Greg Simon, Jeffrey Alan Tecca, Dan Welcher, and Gregory Youtz. He is also featured on CD releases from labels including Albany Records, Mark Custom, Naxos, and Vienna Modern Masters. He holds bachelor's degrees in music and English from the University of Puget Sound and master's and doctoral degrees in saxophone performance from The University of Texas at Austin.
