Composed by Gloria Coates. Quartet; Solo Small Ensembles; String Quartet. Peters Contemporary Chamber Series. Contemporary. Score and Part(s). 68 pages. Edition Peters #98-EP14595. Published by Edition Peters (PE.EP14595).
ISBN 9790014138202.
String Quartet No. 5 (1988) by Gloria Coates is a 32-minute work in three movements:
- I. Through Time
- II. Through Space
- III. In the Fifth Dimension
1988 was a time of movement in Europe preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall, but also in Gloria Coates' personal life, moving back to New York and living in two places at once. This unrest can be perceived in the quartet by an uneasy avoidance of reaching musical resolutions; on the other hand, it also keeps its composure alive in its balanced structures. (Gloria Coates)
Commissioned for a concert that was cancelled, String Quartet No. 5 was first performed six years later on March 16, 1995, in a portrait concert of Gloria Coates' music at Gasteig, Munich, in the Claudia Trübsbach Series for the Munich Volkshochschule by the Modern String Quartet.
The score and parts (EP 14595) are available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Chamber Series. This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill. Please order from your favorite retailer.
