Score and Parts
This piece was written, for the most part, in Fall 2015 with the third interlude and final movement following in the Fall of 2016. The quartet depicts the story of mankind. The first movement, Birth from the Cosmos, represents the formation of the universe and everything in it, culminating in man. The second movement, starting with an aggressive cello ostinato, represents not only the fall of man, but also advancement and progress toward becoming a unified, advanced society. The third movement, cold and open, looks back at our short time on Earth through the eyeglass of eternity, showing what little impact our chaotic existence has on the grand scheme of things in an infinitely vast universe. A cello cadenza signals the arrival of the final movement which, in contrast to the third, shows our impact on the universe as we are shown the impacts of what we leave behind and left with a singular question: Did our actions matter, or did we fail to leave our mark on an infinite universe?
