George Gershwin (Brooklyn, 1898-Hollywood, 1937) is niet alleen de componist van Rhapsody in Blue', 'Porgy and Bess' en 'An American in Paris', maar hij schreef ook een twintigtal musicals waaronder 'Lady Be Good', 'Show Girls' en 'Strike up the Band' (1927). Gershwin schreef twee bekende satirische marsen 'Wintergreen for President' en 'Strike up the Band'. Deze laatste komt uit de succesrijke gelijknamige Broadway musical en is eigenlijk een spottende allusie op een oorlogsmars voor een leger dat niet het minste idee heeft waarvoor het aan het strijden is.

George Gershwin (Brooklyn, 1898 – Hollywood, 1937) is not only the composer of 'Rhapsody in Blue', 'Porgy and Bess' and 'An American in Paris', he also wrote some twenty musicals, among which 'Lady Be Good', 'Show Girls' and 'Strike up the Band' (1927, 1930). Gershwin wrote two famous satiric marches 'Wintergreen for President' and 'Strike up the Band'; the latter, heard on Broadway in the musical of the same name, was a mock battle cry for an army that didn't have the slightest idea what it was fighting for.

Gershwin a écrit deux belles marches satiriques 'Wintergreen for Pesident' et 'Strike up the Band'; cette dernière connut un grand succès à Broadway lors des représentations de la comédie musicale du même nom. Elle est en fait une parodie de cri de guerre d'une armée qui n'a pas la moindre idée pour quelle cause elle se bat.

Gershwin schrieb zwei bekannte satirische Märsche: 'Wintergreen for President' und 'Strike up the Band'.Der letztere kommt aus dem erfolgreichen gleichnamigen Broadway Musical und ist eigentlich eine spöttische Anspielung auf einen Kriegsmarsch für ein Heer, das nicht die geringste Ahnung hat, für wen es Krieg führt.
