Stormborn starts in the middle of a dramatic adventure whose beginning you don’t remember. All that you know is that you are being chased and a storm is coming. How to escape? With your newfound wings, of course! Stormborn imagines waking up with a start to find yourself capable of flying and follows you as you test your new identity as a creature taming and then sailing on the rivers of the wind.It is important to keep the rhythmic sections very intense and driving. By contrast, the mysterious sections (such as m. 39) are more sustained and lyrical. Almost everything in the piece is derived from the opening measures by means of varying material from the first theme, so whenever possible focus on making the new material feel like it is emerging from the background (this is especially clear in the first twenty measures of the piece).I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles and that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts.—Peter TerryBluffton, Ohio 2015.
