It can be performed by: A combined flex band and string ensemble Band only Strings only With or without percussion The arrangement is built around four core parts, each with an optional simplified version for beginning players. Simplified parts feature on-the-beat supportive rhythms and do not carry the melody. (Timpani, Bass Drum, and Suspended Cymbal do not have simplified versions.)Most of the arrangement falls at a comfortable Grade 2 level. Some optional octave extensions and higher-range moments in Part 1, and a few Part 3 brass parts, reach Grade 2.5–3 and can be included, omitted, or modified depending on your ensemble.The introduction is in 4/4, transitioning into a 6/8 section driven largely by unison rhythms. A few duplets in 6/8 offer an opportunity to introduce or reinforce this rhythmic concept.An optional narrator may speak Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s legendary opening monologue during the introduction, adding a dramatic touch to the performance.String NotesAll string parts include suggested bowings. Simplified parts mirror the bowings of the regular lines for visual consistency within the section; directors may adjust as needed.A Personal NoteI grew up watching Star Trek, and later The Next Generation, and the series filled my childhood with adventure, optimism, and the belief in a brighter future. After 30 years of teaching and directing young musicians, I still carry that sense of discovery into every ensemble I work with.This arrangement was created for Muzicool!, the children’s band in my villages of Halfweg & Zwanenburg, Netherlands; twelve enthusiastic young musicians who inspired me to craft something both iconic and attainable for a small, flexible ensemble.
