The opening brass fanfare gives way to the haunting melody, originally performed on whistle, which is featured here for E♭ whistle or C piccolo. There are several brief solo moments woven throughout the ensemble, trading off between woodwind and brass before coming to a climactic peak and tender ending.
Written with flexibility in mind, the concert band arrangement of Star Trek the Inner Light includes many optional parts that may be omitted without loss of essential material, including oboes and bassoons. Well suited to middle school, high school, and community bands, this three-minute, Grade 2.5 arrangement is both a beautiful showcase and an effective teaching piece for tone, balance, and musical sensitivity.
