From the pen of the brilliant film composer Michael Giacchino, and from the soundtrack to the 2013 hit film 'Star Trek Into Darkness', Matt Shaw brings this incredible score to life for British style Brass Band, with his ingenious arrangement of the Main Theme from Star Trek Into Darkness.
The arrangement opens with 2nd horn and solo baritone playing the punchy, iconic ostinato, accompanied with bright percussion (anvil and vibraphone), which gradually builds through the whole band, thickening the texture and increasing the excitement from the off. The main theme soon enters, soaring above pounding percussion and expansive low brass chords, with passages of interest for all players around the stand throughout the arrangement. Trombones and basses mimic their orchestral counterparts playing a secondary more ominous ostinato, before the texture thins into moments of solo playing for soprano, repiano and horns. Following a solo for timpani, a recapitulation of the main theme brings the band back to full power, only to be cut short by an homage from the Original Theme from Star Trek, by Alexander Courage and Gene Roddenberry. Percussion build the band into a final furious 5 bars, bringing the arrangement to a purposeful and unison finish.
This arrangement from Matt Shaw and Nova Vocem Music showcases the band as a whole, but has feature moments for soprano cornet, trombones, basses and percussion. It has already found favour with bands, audiences and judges alike as a concert and competition item, featuring in winning contest programmes relating to space, Film and TV, and flight, and works well as an opening item for concert programmes. We are thrilled to finally be able to make this arrangement available.
Suggested level of 2nd Section + is in relation to ranges required by soprano, euphonium and BBb basses, but it is a wholly approachable arrangement for any band given practice.
