Stabat Mater - Choral 3-Part - Digital Sheet Music

Performance note:

"Stabat Mater" is a short yet dark and dramatic choral work for the Lenten season (especially Good Friday), empowered by its mood and imagery. Even its closing six notes in the soprano line echo the final tearful words of Mary: "My Lord, My God, My Son…" As a whole, the piece is meant to give us a real understanding of Mary’s position as Christ’s Mother that day at Calvary. Written for choir and piano, the overall dark mood of the opening is contrasted by the frenzied Allegro section, before calming down to a quiet, tearful ending. Since choral resources can be daunting during Holy Week, I have composed this work in three parts instead of four: SAB. (Speaking of limited resources, I did not have access to a choir when I made the attached audio file, so please forgive the synthesized choral "ah" sounds.)Note too, that this piece is written in Latin...and in English. The Latin words are echoed and/or overlapping with an English translation (usually in the Bass). In so describing the mood and the pathos of this piece I do not mean it to be theatrical; it is emotional. But with its contrasting dynamics and setting, "Stabat Mater" can be a perfect harbinger to Easter joy at the Resurrection. Performance note: I suggest Quarter Note mm80 for the Adagio sections, and try 120 for the Allegro section - although in my Organ arrangement of this same work I applied 160 to the Allegro; see what works for your environment in order to give a good, tense feeling to the Allegro without going so fast that the words are unclear.God bless.
