WAM, aka Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, wrote 23 string quartets and this also happens to be my 23rd string quartet. Instead of dedicating mine to WAM, I have decided to dedicate it to Gaetano Donizetti who wrote 18 very elegant and beautiful string quartets in his life time.
Donizetti (1797-1848) is, of course, famous for his grand operas, but not for chamber music. According to Wikipedia, he apparently wrote more than 70 operas!!! The famous ones are "L'elisir d'amore," "Lucia di Lammermoor," "Lucrezia Borgia," "Anna Bolena," "Don Pasquale," etc.
Surprisingly, his string quartets are actually quite beautiful and very tuneful. I am sure I will find hidden little gems among them for inspiration.
"SQ23 ... Hommage à Donizetti" is in 6 movements:
1. introduzione: Maestoso e pesante ... Allegro leggero 2. Adagio ma non troppo 3. Allegro vivo ... Moderato TRIO I & II 4. Larghetto ... Moderato 5. Andante 6. Largo.
