This piece is a variation based on “Spring of Hometown” by Hong Nan-pa, who played an important role in spreading Western music to Korea. The children’s song “Spring of Hometown” was composed in 1929 and is a very familiar melody to all Koreans, regardless of age or gender. The content of the poem sings of a beautiful and longing longing for the village where one lived as a child. Following the lively 4/4 beat intro, the violin plays the theme as if reciting a poem, followed by the first variation composed of gorgeous broken chords. The second and third variations are played in all parts while alternating between the unique Korean rhythms of “Jajinmori” and “Gutgeori.” In the fourth variation, a slowly expanded theme is played, while the violin decorates the piano part’s theme with fast, up-and-down notes, and the cello with flexible melodies. This is followed by a duet with a cadenza-like character for violin and cello, a final variation with a majestic character, and a short coda to conclude the piece. Traditionally, Italian is used for the musical symbols and expressions written in the score, but in this piece, I tried to include texts (Korean and English) that fit the musical situation in the score so that the performer can feel the Korean sentiment more specifically and play the piece.
