This piece is a variation based on the theme of “Spring of Hometown” by Nan-pa Hong, who played an important role in spreading Western music to Korea. The children’s song “Spring of Hometown” was composed in 1929 and is a very familiar melody to all Koreans, regardless of age or gender. The poem sings of a beautiful and longing for the village where he lived during his childhood. Following the lively 4/4 beat intro, the violin plays the theme as if reciting a poem, followed by the first variation composed of gorgeous broken chords. The second and third variations are played by the solo and accompaniment, alternating between the Korean rhythms “Jajinmori” and “Gutgeori.” In the fourth variation, a slowly expanded theme is played, and the violin decorates the theme of the accompaniment with ascending and descending notes. This is followed by a violin cadenza, a final variation with a majestic character, and a short coda to conclude the piece.
