By Traditional. By Han-Ki Kim. Arranged by hanki kim. This edition: pdf. Graduation, Instructional, Romantic Period, Standards, Traditional. Score and individual part. 19 pages. Han-Ki Kim #1156549. Published by Han-Ki Kim (A0.1585093).
This piece is a variation based on the theme of “Spring of Hometown” by Nan-pa Hong, who played an important role in spreading Western music to Korea. The children’s song “Spring of Hometown” was composed in 1929 and is a very familiar melody to all Koreans, regardless of age or gender. The content of the poem sings of a beautiful and longing longing for the village where one lived as a child. Following the lively 4/4 beat intro, the viola plays the theme as if reciting a poem, followed by the first variation composed of gorgeous broken chords. The second and third variations are played by the soloist and accompaniment, alternating between the Korean rhythms “Jajinmori” and “Gutgeori.” In the fourth variation, a slowly expanded theme is played, and the viola decorates the theme of the accompaniment with ascending and descending notes. This is followed by a cadenza, a final variation with a majestic character, and a short coda to conclude the piece. Traditionally, the musical symbols and expressions written in the score are mainly in Italian, but in this piece, I tried to include texts (Korean and English) that fit the musical situation in the score so that the performer can feel the Korean hometown sentiment more specifically and play it. The original piece was composed for violin and piano in 2012, and was rearranged for viola and piano in 2025. Attached music file is recorded by Violin and Piano. It's just for a reference.
