"Spring in My Hometown," Op. 159G for bassoon and piano, is a set of variations based on the children's song "Spring in My Hometown," composed in 1929 by Hong Nan-pa, a pioneer of modern Korean music. Based on a melody familiar to every Korean, this piece creates a new artistic resonance by combining Western musical techniques with Korean sentiment.
The piece begins with a lively 4/4 prelude, where the bassoon plays the theme as if reciting a poem. The subsequent variations possess distinct musical characteristics, colorfully expanding the sentiment of the original piece.
* Short introduction and presentation of the theme.
* Variation 1: The bassoon applies Gutgeori, a traditional Korean rhythm, while the piano accompaniment uses Jajinmori, demonstrating a contrasting effect between traditional rhythms and Western instruments.
* Variation 2: As the piano plays a slowly expanded theme, the bassoon embellishes it with very fast ascending and descending melodic figures, evoking a lyrical atmosphere. * Variation 3: The piano plays a theme of a relatively lively character, while the bassoon embellishes it with calm, stepwise motifs, concluding the piece with a short, energetic coda.
Commissioned for the Hong Nanpa House Concert on June 20, 2026, the score has been rearranged for bassoon and piano.
