Parodie IX. Composed by Stanley Friedman. Contemporary. Score and parts. Composed 2003. Duration 20'. Editions BIM #ENS174. Published by Editions BIM (ET.ENS174).
ISBN 9790207006257.
Spanish Dances (Parodie IX) was commissioned by the Louisville Brass and won First Prize in the 2003 International Trumpet Guild Composition Competition. Performed by the Louisville Brass, the world premiere took place at the ITG Conference at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in May 2003.
This work certainly is not “authentically Spanish, nor was it ever meant to be taken as such. But the three movements were inspired by traditional dances and structured in Classical forms: Habanera/Sonata, Pavane/Variations, Bolero/Rondo (with themes borrowed from the first two movements).
I have written several brass works undertitled Parodie, based either on existing music or, as in the present case, on familiar musical styles, often with ethnic or national references. I use the term parodie in its medieval sense and without satiric intent.
