By Sam And Dave. By Isaac Hayes. Arranged by Adam Flanagan. This edition: pdf. Blues, Pop, R & B, Rock, Soul. 24 pages. Adam Flanagan #1184366. Published by Adam Flanagan (A0.1615022).

Released in 1967, the song was composed by Issac Hayes and David Porter, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s. Watching the news coverage of the aftermath of the 12th Street Riot in Detroit, Hayes noted that black residents had marked African-American owned-property with the word ‘Soul’, on the buildings not destroyed during the riots. The songwriting duo came up with the song’s premise of ‘a story about one’s struggle to rise above his present conditions. It’s almost a tune kind of like boasting, ‘I’m a Soul man’. It’s a pride thing’- Issac Hayes.

The song has been selected for the preservation in the National Recording Registry as,‘culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant’ by the Library of Congress.

This arrangement of the song is made for senior school rock bands in mind. The key has been changed to E (the original is in G) to place notes in a suitable range for young male vocalists. BVs have been omitted from this arrangement, although I’m certain there will be vocalists that can add harmonies to the chorus without too much thought!

Guitar part 1 contains the main guitar part from the record, whereas guitar part 2 is a funky part played on the higher register of the instrument. Brass parts are included with this arrangement, chose the sax part that matches your band. Other parts are similar to the origins recording.

This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard's global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. ArrangeMe allows for the publication of unique arrangements of both popular titles and original compositions from a wide variety of voices and backgrounds.
