Sea chantey’s sometimes spelled shantey’s were songs that were played or sung aboard ships so men could work together doing the everyday tasks such as raising and lowering sails raising and lowering anchors, loading or unloading cargo. Ships had a “shanteyman” whose job it was to lead the men in song. There were often specific songs for each task. These wonderful melodies have found their way into the realm of folk songs today.
