I wrote this Sonatina for a clarinettist friend who has performed it in its bass clarinet version Oxford's famous Holywell Music Room. Here it has been made suitable for the standard Bb clarinet. It is written using the octatonic scale. There are three movements: First a bright and lively Allegro featuring rhythmic exchanges between pianist and wind player, then a Larghetto - 'Misterioso' - exploiting the mysterious clarino register of the clarinet in various trills and suspensions and then the Finale - again a lively muscular piece with many conversations driving towards an exhilarating conclusion. 'Sonatina' fills a need for a concert display piece featuring clarinet and has a duration of about 10 minutes.
