The flute sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach are unusual in that they are not found in sets of six suites or sonatas. This is in contrast with many other of his instrumental and chamber works, for example those for solo violin and cello or the English and French suites for harpsichord. They also do not correspond in source, period or compositional style.

The present SONATA IN E MINOR, BWV 1034, a typical example of the late baroque Sonata da Chiesa form, is composed in four movements which contrast one another in tempo and mood. The Allegro movements are derived from contemporary Italian violin sonata form, particularly the second with its ritornello section. The two slower movements are contrasting ones in key as well as effect. The Andante, which is in the relative major, is a stunningly beautiful piece which provided the inspiration for Mr. Russell to transcribe the other three movements.

Like the works mentioned above, this sonata dates from the period when Bach was at the service of Prince Leopold at Anhalt-Cöthen from 1717 until 1723. It is one of three flute sonatas scored with figured bass, the presence of which has enabled this work to be transcribed to the guitar since the system allows considerable latitude in working out the composer’s harmonic intentions.

Guitarists will be sure to find this work a valuable and inspiring addition to their repertoire since it displays imagination and creativity and is completely convincing as a "guitar sonata".
