Sonata No. 1 for Trombone and Piano was written for American trombonist Larry Zalkind. The piece is in three movements and tonal throughout, using various modes to weave familiar yet unpredictable lines and harmonies. The first movement, in F, is a brisk and energetic sonata form, using various major and minor modes. The second movement is a Larghetto in simple ABA song form. The somber, reflective opening section is in f minor. The lush middle section builds through major keys, cascading back to the original f minor theme to close. The third movement opens with a solo statement that leads into a dance-like 6/8 rondo in F, alternating its energetic themes between minor and major. Difficulty level is medium-advanced, and perfect for recital, festival or contest. Total performance time is 13:35. Member, ASCAP.
