I've loved Haydn's Sonatas almost as long as I've played the Piano. My teacher included them in my earliest lessons. Originally, I mistook them as a necessary evil to piano study, along with Hanon, Czerny, Clementi, Dussek, et al. However, my admiration for them matured as soon as I did. Am 4-ever grateful to Emmanuel Ax for championing this particular one, with which he began two recitals when I heard him live circa 1981. Rarely have I ever attended artists' gigs more than once unless something unusual attracted me, eg., for their diverse selections, rather than (play) the same old tunes pupils endure until ready for bigger things. Mr. Ax excels at big things, which I also love. In earlier reviews I mentioned how frustrating it was to obtain quality scores back in the day. Although I worked briefly for a certain major music publisher; my connections never could penetrate the Cold War's defenses, or its disastrous effects on culture. great works went missing. At last I found this one.
