Arranger’s Notes
Written when just 18 years old, Richard Wagner’s (1813 – 1883) Sonata in B-flat (1831) shows hints of the master he was destined to be. Verbose, but also harmonically playful, Wagner’s Opus 1 (WWV 21) is dedicated to his teacher Christian Theodor Weinlig (1780 – 1842). A composer both reveled and reviled, I hope this arrangement becomes another Wagner work beloved by brass players.
There aren’t many editions available, and the ones that exist can be frustratingly inconsistent with articulation and dynamics, between versions and within themselves. My final decisions considered what would be best for performers, as well as what the music hinted towards.
This arrangement is intended for a Euphonium, not Trombone, as Wagner’s arpeggiated lefthand passages better fit the flow and tempo only achievable with valves. Adept Trombonists are welcome to attempt, and modify patterns appropriately in pursuit of ideal performances.
